Foot Care Essentials

Key guidance for people living with diabetes, adapted from the Vascular Diabetic Foot Passport used by hospital diabetic foot clinics.

Foot Care — Do's

  • Check your feet every day
  • Wash with lukewarm water & dry well
  • Moisturise dry skin (not between toes)
  • Wear comfortable footwear
  • Cut nails straight across
  • Control blood sugar
  • Do regular exercise
  • Visit clinic regularly

Foot Care — Don'ts

  • Do not walk barefoot
  • Do not use a hot water bottle
  • Do not use sharp objects
  • Do not cut corns/callus at home
  • Do not ignore any wound
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not stop medicines

Danger Signs — Seek Help Immediately

Increasing pain
Redness / swelling
Pus / bad smell
Wound getting bigger
Fever / chills
Blackening of toe / foot
Loss of sensation

Foot Risk — Traffic Light System

GreenLow Risk

No ulcer, good circulation

Review: Monthly

AmberModerate Risk

Callus / corn, mild PAD changes

Review: Weekly

OrangeHigh Risk

Active ulcer, infection / cellulitis

Review: Daily

RedCritical Risk

Severe infection, gangrene / CLI

Immediate vascular review
